Hans Elliott
Researcher, data analyst, student · Seattle, WA
I studied economics at the University of Oregon and have worked professionally as a research assistant, data analyst, and research scientist, most recently at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington. Lately I've been studying mathematics at UW while working at IHME, and I'm applying to graduate programs for Fall 2027 in applied math and statistics.

A Glimpse at Algebraic Vision: An Introduction to the Multiview Variety
As a final project for UW Math 380 (Spring 2026: computational algebraic geometry), I explored applications of algebraic geometry to computer vision, a growing field known as "algebraic vision." I also attempted to implement some relevant computer vision algorithms.

A Bayesian Approach for Extending National Health Accounts to Estimate Out-of-Pocket Spending on Maternal Health
Expanding on my work at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, I had the opportunity to present original research at the Consortium of Universities for Global Health conference in 2025, in Atlanta, GA.

Research Assistant, University of Oregon
Data extraction, linkage, and analysis on an HPC cluster, including matching NOAA weather-station records to study subjects with a nearest-neighbor search.
-
Rash Plant Classification
Scraped an original image dataset of common North American rash plants from iNaturalist, then used transfer learning to train a deep vision model that classifies plants as toxic or nontoxic with 86% test accuracy. This was a difficult task given its 'fine-grained' nature (differentiating between hard-to-distinguish object classes).

Regression Discontinuity Replication: Air Pollution and China's Huai River Policy
A replication of Ebenstein et al. (2017), "New evidence on the impact of sustained exposure to air pollution on life expectancy from China's Huai River Policy."
